At the request of a member of the Port Matilda Fire Police, staff is providing some scenarios in the event you come across a road that has been unforeseeably closed due to an emergency. There was some concern that citizens are unaware of alternate routes in and out of the Township. Please note these are just four examples created by staff to show ideas for alternate routes into the Township and are by no means intended to be followed in every circumstance.
Scenario 1: This map shows a route that can be taken if a section of State Route 550 or (W. Buffalo Run Road or Halfmoon Valley Road) is blocked off due to an emergency. Turning around near Meeks Lane you will head northeast on W. Buffalo Run Rd/PA-550 travel approximately .94 miles. Turn sharp left onto Skytop Mountain Rd travel approximately 3.48 miles. Turn slight right onto S Eagle Valley Rd/US-220 Alt S. Continue to follow US-220 Alt S travel approximately 2.59 miles. Turn left onto S High St travel approximately .23 miles. Turn slight left onto Beckwith Rd travel approximately 1.18 miles. Turn left to stay on Beckwith Rd travel approximately .75 miles. Keep left at the fork to continue on Beckwith Rd and then turn slight left or right onto Halfmoon Valley Rd/PA-550 whichever way your destination requires.
Scenario 2: This map shows a route that can be taken if a section of road between Meeks Lane and Skytop Lane is blocked off due to an emergency which would not allow traffic to flow the regular route up PA-550. If you notice on the map there are a various amount of ways to arrive at Meeks Lane. Starting out heading north on Skytop Mountain Rd. You will turn left onto Sellers Ln. travel approximately .92 miles and turn right onto Meeks Ln travel approximately .95 miles turn left or right onto PA-550 (W. Buffalo Rd) whichever way your destination requires.
Scenario 3: This map shows a route that can be taken if a citizen would like to take Marengo Rd into the Twp. Starting on W. College Ave travel approximately 2.82 miles. Turn right onto W Whitehall Rd travel approximately 3.79 miles. Turn right onto Tadpole Rd travel approximately 5.29 miles. Turn right onto Marengo Rd. travel approximately 2.65 miles. Turn slight right to stay on Marengo Rd travel approximately 2.03 miles. Turn left to stay on Marengo Rd. travel .56 miles and then left or right onto PA-550 (Halfmoon Valley Road) whichever way your destination requires. (Please note you could also use W. Gatesburg Rd. instead of Tadpole Rd.)
Scenario 4: This final map shows a route that can be taken if Marengo Road is closed. Starting on W. College Ave travel approximately 2.82 miles. Turn right onto W Whitehall Rd travel approximately 7.45 miles. Turn right onto Spruce Creek Rd/PA-45 travel approximately 5.47 miles. Turn right onto Warriors Mark Path/PA-350 travel approximately 4.35 miles. Turn right onto Centre Line Rd/PA-550 travel approximately 1.32 miles. Turn left to stay on Centre Line Rd./PA-550 travel approximately .71 miles. Turn right onto Halfmoon Valley Road/PA-550 travel approximately 1.44 miles, then you have officially entered back into Halfmoon Township and can continue whichever way your destination requires.
As you can see from the four scenarios above there are various ways (including some that are not mentioned) to get around a closed roadway to make it to your destination. Provided were just four examples to keep in mind if you find yourself in need of finding an alternate route home. For further assistance you can plan your travels on mapquest.com; google maps, and various GPS devices.
I hope this demonstration was useful in alternative route planning. Safe Travels!
